Athol has some 45 years experience in Customs and related border security, including 30 years with the Australian Customs Service. He holds a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and a Master’s degree in International Customs Law and Administration and a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment. He lectures in the Centre’s vocational programs
Athol has worked with AusAID, ASEAN, APEC, the World Customs Organisation, Oceania Customs Organisation, UNDCP, and a number of regional organisations to design and implement Customs modernisation programs and related initiatives. His activities have included a program to develop and implement a comprehensive risk management approach to border control for the Royal Government of Cambodia, a communication and change management strategy for Lao PDR Customs and Customs reform and modernisation programs in Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste.
