Chris Lawson
Chris is the Academic Course Director at the Centre for Customs and Excise Studies and serves as Senior Lecturer and Principal Consultant, specialising in customs reform and modernisation. 

Chris' career spans nearly four decades, beginning with Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise in London and Dundee, where he also undertook sanctions missions in Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Iraq, and contributed to the implementation of ASYCUDA++ in Lithuania with UNCTAD.

Since 2001, Chris has worked internationally as a Customs Advisor, leading reform and modernization projects across Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Jordan, Kosovo, Pakistan, Somalia, and Ukraine. He has held senior leadership roles including Chief of Party, Customs Reform Manager, and Team Lead, and brings extensive expertise in curriculum development, training needs analysis, and delivery of specialized programs in areas such as anti-smuggling, risk management, post-clearance audit, and leadership development.

Chris joined CCES as a lecturer in 2021 and has since co-delivered the Bachelor of Border Management to Qatari Customs officers in Doha, while also teaching in Fiji and Saudi Arabia. He currently contributes to both the Master in Customs Administration and Bachelor of Border Management programs. 

He holds Master’s degrees in International Customs Law and Administration and International Revenue Administration from the University of Canberra.
